The European Union (EU) has decided to keep €18 billion frozen for Hungary. This money includes €8.4 billion for development projects and €9.5 billion for COVID-19 recovery. The EU says Hungary has not made enough progress in fixing problems with democracy and the rule of law. Last year, the EU gave Hungary eight recommendations, such as improving anti-corruption laws and ensuring media independence. Hungary has not followed most of these recommendations. Michael McGrath, the EU Justice Commissioner, said he is disappointed but hopes Hungary will make changes so the money can be released. Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, says the EU is using 'financial blackmail.' The EU also fined Hungary €200 million for breaking migration laws, with an extra €1 million for each day the problem continues. The EU says Hungary must follow EU laws and court decisions.
